The legal fraternity is usually looked upon as an older generation who are set in their ways and adverse to change. However, according to a recent American Bar Association (ABA) Legal Technology Survey Report, 40% of large-firm lawyers now use mobile devices for their day to day activities.

de Groots Publishing quickly jumped on board the mobile device trend but a key critical component when considering the publishing platform was the need to be device independent. Their legal documents had to be delivered seamlessly to computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones.

Their 700+ page "Wills, Probate and Administration Practice (Queensland) (WPAP) publication is made up of two binders that subscribers purchase. It is created using Adobe InDesign and goes through a time consuming and costly publishing and delivery process.

The WPAP publication, that contains commentary and legislation content, is now being published to tekReader and currently has over 500+ subscribers. By adopting tekReader, de Groots receives an excellent return on investment based on the revenue generated through their subscription fees. Over time they will phase out their paper based product which will eliminate costly production overheads and improve their bottom line even more!

Over the past year we have developed an institutional sign in mechanism and have integrated tekReader with PayPal®.

The institutional sign in allows users to access de Groots publications based on the IP address they access tekReader from. This flexible solution allows institutions to purchase and access publications for all their users. Queensland University of Technology, The University of Queensland, University of Southern Queensland (Library) and the Supreme Court Library Queensland are currently using the sign in.

The PayPal® integration allowed users to purchase publications through PayPal® and then have immediate access to read them using tekReader. The tekReader administration panel was enhanced to provide a dashboard that updates purchase and account information that is being populated by the PayPal® API. Notification email templates were also developed allowing the de Groots administrator to edit through the admin panel. The emails are sent automatically to new and existing users and provide information based on the workflow initiated by a particular user.
